Nissan Dominates Private Car Sales in First 8 Months of 2023

Nissan, the renowned Japanese automaker, has emerged as the leader in private car sales in the local market for the first eight months of 2023, securing an impressive 20.6% market share by selling 7.8 thousand cars.

The Automotive Market Information Council (AMIC) released a report indicating that private car sales witnessed a significant decline, with only 38 thousand cars sold during this period, down from 110.2 thousand cars sold in the same timeframe last year, marking a substantial 65% decrease.

In the rankings, the “Chery – Ghabbour” brand secured the second position with a market share of 15.5% and 5.8 thousand cars sold, followed by the “Renault” brand in third place with sales exceeding 3.3 thousand cars and a market share of 8.7%.

The “BYD” brand claimed the fourth spot with an 8.2% market share, selling 3.1 thousand cars, while the “MG” brand rose to fifth place with a 6.7% market share and approximately 2.5 thousand cars sold.

Surprisingly, the Toyota brand slipped to sixth place in the list of best-selling brands in the automobile market for the first eight months of 2023, recording a market share of 6.7% with sales amounting to about 2.5 thousand cars.

Seventh place was secured by the “Hyundai” brand, which sold 2.3 thousand cars and claimed a 6.2% market share, followed closely by the “Kia” brand in eighth place with about 2.2 thousand cars sold and a market share of 5.8%.

The “Mitsubishi” brand came in ninth place, with sales of 1.5 thousand cars, and a market share of 4%, followed by the “Opel” brand in tenth place, with a total of 1.1 thousand cars sold, and a market share of 3.1%.

In the eleventh spot, the “Suzuki” brand sold more than a thousand cars and held a market share of 2.9%, while the “Citroen” brand rounded out the top twelve after selling over a thousand cars and achieving a market share of 2.2%.

Among the list of best-selling brands in the automobile market for the first eight months of 2023, other models collectively recorded the sale of 2.6 thousand cars, securing a market share of 6.9%.

European Car Sales Plunge by 70%, Chinese Cars Lead

According to the AMIC report, European car sales in Egypt took a massive hit, declining by approximately 70% during the first eight months of 2023, with only 6.3 thousand cars sold compared to about 21.2 thousand cars in the same period of 2022.

In contrast, Chinese car models managed to outperform, with a 59.5% decline resulting in the sale of more than 12.3 thousand cars, compared to approximately 30.5 thousand cars sold in the previous year.

American-made cars experienced an even steeper decline of 83.1%, with only 637 cars sold during the first eight months of 2023, down from about 3.7 thousand cars sold in the same period last year.

Japanese car sales decreased by 61.3%, totaling about 14.1 thousand cars, compared to about 36.5 thousand cars sold in the comparative period. Korean cars faced a 71.3% decline, selling 4.5 thousand cars, down from 15.8 thousand cars in the comparative period.

In terms of origin, Indian cars only managed to sell a single unit during the first eight months of 2023, a sharp decline from the 2.2 thousand cars sold in the same period in 2022.

The AMIC report paints a bleak picture of the car market, revealing an overall decline of about 65.5% in sales during the first eight months of 2023, with only 51.1 thousand cars sold compared to about 148.4 thousand cars during the same period last year.

Bus sales also took a hit, declining to just over 5 thousand buses, compared to 11.3 thousand buses sold in 2022, marking a decrease of 55.7%. Truck sales followed suit, with more than 8 thousand trucks sold, down from 26.8 thousand units in the comparative period, representing a significant 70% decrease.
