“Alkan Auto” and “BAIC” Partner to Launch an Electric Car Factory in Egypt
Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport attended the signing of an agreement between the Chinese auto manufacturer BAIC and Egypt’s Alkan Auto, a member of the Egyptian International Automotive Group.
This agreement aims to establish a new electric car manufacturing facility in Egypt.
Zhao Pengfei, Vice President of BAIC, and Khaled Nosair, Chairman of Alkan Auto’s Board of Directors, conducted the signing ceremony.
Several high-ranking officials attended, including Song Wei, President of BAIC, Taher Lashin, CEO and Managing Director of the Egyptian International Automotive Group, and Ahmed El Khadem, General Manager of the Kia and BAIC brands in Egypt, along with several Ministry of Industry leaders.
At the event’s opening, Minister Al-Wazir emphasized that this collaboration aligns with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, aimed at establishing Egypt as a regional industrial hub, localizing the automotive and supporting industries, and expanding the role of the private sector.
He welcomed this strategic partnership, highlighting the Ministry’s commitment to support this project and expedite its transition into the production phase.
As part of this support, the General Authority for Industrial Development has allocated the necessary industrial land, and the Ministry stands ready to facilitate all industrial licensing procedures to ensure a smooth start to production.
The Minister also underscored the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing local manufacturing and attracting international investment in the automotive industry and its supporting industries, which would serve both the local market and exports to the Middle East and Africa.
He assured that the Ministry of Industry is prepared to offer extensive support to global auto companies to foster production and expansion within Egypt, thereby injecting real investment into the economy, promoting local industry, and generating more employment opportunities for Egyptian youth.
The factory, set to begin production by the end of 2025, will span 120,000 square meters and initially focus on meeting domestic demand and export needs in the Middle East and African markets.
The factory is projected to produce 20,000 electric vehicles in its first year, with plans to increase production to 50,000 units annually within five years.
The local content rate will start at 48%, with a target of increasing it to 58%. This project is expected to create approximately 1,200 jobs.
BAIC President Song Wei expressed the company’s enthusiasm for expanding its presence in the Egyptian market, which he noted as one of the most significant markets in the region.
This commitment was underscored by the recent global launch of a new BAIC model in Cairo.
He also highlighted BASIC’s longstanding history, dating back to 1958, and its dedication to producing high-quality electric vehicles, achieved through continued investments in research and development both in China and international markets.
